Our team has a wide range of expertise and interests and work to promote robust global mental health and cultural psychiatry research within the UK and globally with a strong focus on low income settings.
Mental health conditions are a growing public health concern worldwide including the UK in general and among minority ethnic communities in particular. Extraordinary efforts are needed to reduce this burden by not only to increase access to treatment and clinical care but also on prevention and building resilience. This is a challenge for the health partitioners, social services and policy makers under the current financial uncertainty that exists worldwide. Global Mental Health and Cultural Psychiatry Group (GMHCP) has been focusing not only on developing cost effective interventions for early diagnosis and treatment but also on prevention and promoting resilience.
The leading cause of disability-adjusted life years (DALYs) from all non-communicable diseases is mental health disorders. These disorders relate to severe social, educational and occupational impairment, physical illness, and premature mortality. Approximately, 75% of the burden of mental illness comes from low- and middle-income countries (LMICs). Along with LMICs, racial and ethnic minorities adds to the burden due to unmet mental health needs and thus suffer a greater loss to their overall health and productivity in high income countries (HICs). Global mental health and cultural psychiatry (GMHCP) focuses on improving health inequalities and developing culturally appropriate solutions for LMICs and ethnic minorities in HICs.
